The difference between vegan, organic, eco-friendly and cruelty-free

It’s common to see ‘Vegan’, ‘Vegetarian’ and ‘Organic’ labels on cosmetic products these days, but crucially, none of these terms is a guarantee that the ingredients haven’t been tested on animals.

To make things as easy and transparent as possible for shoppers, we’re now including these terms in the guide too. However, please note:

Vegan – this means that the brand you’re looking at offers vegan-friendly products. Please don’t assume it applies to the company’s whole range. Check with the company first.

Organic – this indicates that the company offers products that are kind to animals and organic. Once again though, it’s important to check whether this applies across the whole product range.

Eco-friendly – this indicates that the company offers products that are kind to animals and the environment. Once again though, it’s important to check whether this applies across the whole product range.

We do our very best to make sure the information we provide is accurate and up to date, but we need your help too. Company policies and ingredients can change quickly, so if you think we need to update something, contact us on compassionateshopping@naturewatch.org
